Wondaland Records Release Protest Song "Hell You Talmbout"
After helping to lead a Black Lives Matter march in Philadelphia, followed by their involvement in Thursday's Times Square demonstration in New York, Janelle Monae and Jidenna, with help from the Wondaland Records family (Deep Cotton, St. Beauty, Roman GianArthur & George 2.0), released "Hell You Talmbout".
Inspired by and aimed at those marching and protesting ongoing injustices across the country, "Hell You Talmbout" is a call to action that addresses the individuals who died due to police brutality.
With drums reminiscent of a marching band followed by deeper almost tribal undertones as the tune progresses, Wondaland Records' "Hell You Talmbout" is a solid, inspiring song that a year removed from the unrest in Ferguson couldn't be more relevant. From the opening "Walter Scott! Say his name!", the tone of the entire song has been set.
The tune was released with the following message via Monae's Instagram account:
This song is a vessel. It carries the unbearable anguish of millions. We recorded it to channel the pain, fear, and trauma caused by the ongoing slaughter of our brothers and sisters. We recorded it to challenge the indifference, disregard, and negligence of all who remain quiet about this issue. Silence is our enemy. Sound is our weapon. They say a question lives forever until it gets the answer it deserves...Won't you say their names?
