André was nearly 40 when he plays Jimi Hendrix, who died at the age of 27. I wondered about that enough to look it up right after watching because I don't know if I buy him playing 20's. Another thing I found interesting was that the film won't include any songs written by Hendrix, as the filmmakers' request to use them was denied by Hendrix's estate. Instead, the film – set in London in 1966 and 1967 – will include the songs that Hendrix performed during those years, before the release of his debut album, Are You Experienced. Regardless, Ruth Negga is in this so I'll be watching no matter how it looks.
The movie is directed by Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave) and has already caused controversy as several of Hendrix's friends have vocally decried the film as largely fictitious.
Jimi:All Is By My Side is set to be released September 26 in theaters.
