For its 20th anniversary season of their free summertime music series, Sunset Concerts, The Skirball Cultural Center continues to feature an eclectic mix of traditions and styles. Last night was no exception. Brooklyn-based Sinkane, the talented multi-instrumentalist, brought a transfixing afro-punk sound that defied any conventional genre definition with influences from krautrock, bluegrass, funk rock, and Sudanense pop. The band intuitively bended and swayed in what seemed like freeform motion with him as he moved from keyboard, to guitar, to mic and back again.

A larger stage had been erected and moved back above part of the lilypad covered pond. The evening began with an early set by psychedelic pop act Peaking Lights Acid Test (P/LSD), balancing a nice blend of tunes that surprisingly included some strong funk.

As the sun went down Skirball Director of Programs, Andy Horwitz briefly took the stage to talk about the Skirball, their Sunset Concerts series celebrating its 20th year and to introduce Sinkane and company. With the band ready to play and the sun now gone behind the hill, the different colored lights on and behind the stage were now visble, and the band was ready to take over.

People of all ages were enthusiastically brought to their feet with beats and melodies to dance under the stars in the beautiful and intimate courtyard of the Skirball galleries. He also featured many new songs from his upcoming 2017 release that while brand-new, felt wholly familiar. With the drums and heavy basslines, the falsetto on some tracks at times sounded like Curtis Mayfield.

"Sunset Concerts invite Angelenos and out-of-towners alike to dine al fresco, visit the Museum galleries, and explore the Skirball's distinctive architecture and hillside setting."
